THE DANCE SERIES
The innovative Dance Series of Chinese Brush Painter, Wendy Ann, emerged from two sources. Thesynthesis of her dancer's background with the art form of dancing with the brush on rice paper andbeing a prolific artist, it led to her unique presentation of mounting the delicate rice paper painting onto a painted canvas, adding tiny three dimensional embellishments and several layers of a sealing process.
From the beginning she knew she wanted to create an installation piece that would "dance" with joy and celebrate the gifts of God, creation and life itself. Hence each of the nine colors represents a "gift". . Gold and silver leaf paint is used to represent the richness of these "gifts". The use of the numbers three and seven in her embellishments represent divine perfection and spiritual perfection respectively. Three also represents expression, versatility & the pure joy of creativity, along with the Trinity and in time, past, present and future. In Buddhism there are seven heavens and in Christianity 7th Heaven, 7 pillars of wisdom, 7 first fruits and the 7 mysteries to name a few. The number 7 in Chinese Culture represents togetherness. It is also considered spiritual or ghostly.
Yellow, Magenta and Cyan Dance represent the digital CMYK process of creating color. Red, Green and Blue Dance, the photographic RGB system. Purple, Orange and Lime Dance represent the artist's favorite hues of combined colors from the color wheel.
YELLOW DANCE IN THE REALM OF CREATION (The Gift of Life)
In the beginning, had already been used, and since I already had a chop that reads "In The Realm of Creation" the title was a no-brainer to represent the original chaos of creation. Yellow, Green and Purple are the "3" colors that predominate this work. It contains "7" gold heads on streaming gold leaf paint streaks and "7" amber rhinestones, "3" of which form a triangle in the upper left hand corned.
The four seals on this painting translate "There is no end to learning" - lower left hand corner, "Double Glory" above it. Lower right hand corner is my chop and reads "Wendy Ann", the seal above it means"Ascending to another level". The Chinese character for Harmony is stamped "3" times in this painting.
MAGENTA DANCE OF THE SEVEN ANGELS (The Gift of Protection)
The 7 angels are painted white, representing purity and Spiritual Perfection & Protection. There are 7 Chinese coins and 7 coiling circles representing Eastern and Western cultures. The leaf clusters represent the number 3 - Divine Perfection, or in Chinese Painting a host and two guest clusters. The gold calligraphy is my name in Chinese as is the red seal in the lower right hand corner.
CYAN DANCE OF FUR & FEATHERS (The Gifts of Animals & Birds - Dominion)
In Chinese Brush Painting the subject of Ling-Mo, or animal literally translates Feather & Fur. I like the sound of it in reverse, perhaps that is my western ear? Spiritual perfection is represented with the 7amber and 7 clear rhinestones while divine perfection is represented in the 3 dominant colors of cyan, black and silver and 3 corners of lighter cyan hues. You are right if you only counted six silver feathers, the right border of feathers is the 7th.
ORANGE DANCE OF JOY AND BUTTERFLIES - (The Gift of Grace)
The butterfly is known as the Chinese Cupid. They also are the symbols of summer, joy and longevity. The number 3 is represented in 3 paisley embellishments and 3 red abstract characters painted in the lower left and center area. There are also two clusters of three butterflies in the upper left and right hand corners. The four bursts of silver with silver stars plus 3 paisley embellishments represent the number 7. The red right hand seal reads "Song of a Wander, Poem of a Traveler". The left hand seal is my name as is the ink calligraphy. The character for "Joy" is stamped in red twice. A string of beads in the colors of the painting adorns the left hand side of this painting.
PURPLE DANCE OF TWIN SPIRITS - (The Gift of Each Other & Love)
This is a tribute to one of my favorite artists - Gustav Klimt. In my teens until about 30 - Purple was my favorite color and this painting is also my favorite in the series. Purple represents Passion - for life fora loved one, for your favorite things, for your "gifts". The gold decorative squares painted in the two purple areas, are painted in Chinese Calligraphy strokes as is the Character for "human or man". There are 3 major gold leaf painted areas with 3 large beaded designs. The couple are enveloped in an egg shape - representing the cycle of life and the creation of life. The use of purple, red and aqua inside the egg represent the number 3.
LIME DANCE OF THE TREE OF FRUITION - (The Gift of Fruit - Sustenance)
In Chinese Symbolism, the Plum Blossom represents moral excellence and undying love. The Plum branch in this painting has 7 fruits - lime, lemon, apple, peach, orange, plum and 3 cherries. There are 7 silver balls and 3 multi-beaded silver circles. Lime green Swarovski crystals randomly embellish this painting as well as 3 triangles of these crystals. The lower right corner seal reads "Dancing Brush". The upper large seal reads "View From Jade Terrace". The other seal and calligraphy represent my name in Chinese.
RED DANCE OF THE RIVER OF ABUNDANCE - (The Gift of Good Fortune)
Water is the first of the five elements in Chinese Symbolism. Among the Five Symbolic Colors, red and black are the most important, as they are associate with the primary Elements of fire and water. Depending on the standpoint of interpretation, red and black may represent Fire & Water, Spirit & Matter, Heaven & Earth, Yang & Yin. I have added classic gold leaf paint as the third color for Red Dance. The river of abundance is spilling over with ruby and gold beads. There are 7 strands of gold running off the river in the lower center area of the painting. 7 is also represented with larger gold beads and 7 ruby beads along the edges of the river. The Chinese character for Prosperity is stamped in three times in black. The black dragon stamp was a must as the beloved dragon is honored in China for they are considered angels who control the rain, river, lakes and seas. The gold Chinese coin stamps and spiral circles represent East and West. Small Chinese coins border the right edge of this painting.
BLUE DANCE OF THE UNDERWORLD - (Gifts of the Sea - More Sustenance)
The number 7 is represented in this painting by the objects of coral, fish, shrimp, sea shells, seahorse, tortoise and large shell. 7 black Swarovski crystal beads adorn the fish. The number 3 is represented in two triangles of blue rhinestones and 3 coral patterned gold leaf painted areas. Tiny copper beads and 3 shades of blue glitter on the bubbles complete this dance. Once again the seal in the lower right corner is my name in Chinese characters.
GREEN DANCE IN THE GARDEN OF PARADISE - (The Gift of Flowers)
The number 7 is represented with 7 large green pearl beads and 7 silver stars in the sky. The Host is the Bird of Paradise flowers and the 3 Guests are the purple/pink, yellow and orange flowers. There are 3 banana leaves entering from the upper left hand corner. The seal above my name seal reads "Psalm to Nature".
